The Mahatma Educational Society was formed in the year 2004 by a group of fifty socially committed and like minded philanthropists of Kasargod District who belonged to Padmasaliya community, to establish schools and colleges to cater the educational needs of this backward area. The Society was registered on 08.12.2004 vide order number 519/2004 at the office the District Registrar of societies under the able leadership of Late Chandrasekara S Chetty, the Founder President of the Society.
Dr P C Balakrishnan, Late M Narayanan, Sri. T K Muralidharan respectively were the Secretary, Treasurer and Correspondent of the Society . The Mahatma Educational Society is the first venture of the society towards fulfilment of one of its aims.
To enlighten future teachers by providing conducive environment to nurture creativity, imagination and quality of leadership for building an equitable, just and peaceful society.
To foster professional competent teachers who would provide education to bringing in the best qualities of human life, by quality learning environment, commitment to the service of the society, integrating the best in our culture and philosophy.
To be an institution of excellence in teacher education by imparting quality professional education to the young scholars who would be committed to serve the society by upholding the motto of teaching profession ‘Service above Self’ and devoted to integrating the ethnic values and culture of our society.
To become a centre of excellence in teacher education by providing quality learning environment and opportunity to foster creativity, imagination and professionalism among young aspirant teachers who in future would be responsible, devoted , idealistic and successful teachers.

Mahatma College of Education was started in the academic year 2008-09 in a rented building near Market road Nileshwar with one hundred students in five subjects.
The Society purchased 5.26 acres of land at Pandikot in Perol Village and constructed a beautiful two storey College building with a carpet area of 30000 square feet . During the times of construction of college building Adv. K Janardhanan, Sri C Muraleedharan and Late M Narayanan respectively were the President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Society. The College was shifted to the newly constructed campus “Gandhi Nagar Campus” during the academic year 2010-11 with adequate facilities for curricular and extra curricular activities of the students.
Mahatma College of Education is now serving the society as one of the best B Ed colleges under Kannur University.
The NCTE team visited the college campus during 20th and 21st January 2020 and placed it as one of the best B Ed College in the country by evaluating the facilities provided in the campus.
